The Mentors Program is designed to positively affect the retention of incoming students of color and international students by providing one-on-one peer guidance and support for their personal, social and academic development.
MISSION

To provide and facilitate opportunities that encourage academic success To assist students with their cultural and social adjustment to the university To create a sense of belonging to the university community.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Mentors Program pairs students with similar academic and extracurricular interest. Outstanding sophomore, junior and senior students will mentor incoming first year students for two consecutive semesters. Mentors will be a source of information and support for their mentees at all times. It is the objective of this program to build a foundation for incoming students of color and international students and to inspire them to achieve academic and social success.
LIAISON
In addition to providing support, mentors are also liaisons between the students and the various departments on campus. The Mentors Program allows the office of Inclusiveness and Intercultural Services to monitor the achievements and challenges that incoming students of colors face at TCU. It is the responsibility of the IIS office to provide supervision, follow through, open communication and the best available support for mentees and mentors.
COMMITMENT
Participants of this program should treat each other with respect and tolerance. Mentors are not responsible for financial assistance, handling psychological issues or doing the mentee’s homework. Mentors and Mentees should understand the TCU guidelines and not violate them. IIS wants to provide the best experience for mentees to help them achieve their personal and academic goals. It is the responsibility of the participants to follow the right procedures and to keep the office informed at all times.
GROWING TOGETHER
The Mentors Program will be a lifetime growing experience. Mentees and mentors will develop a friendship based on support and understanding.
MEETINGS - IIS requires mentors and mentees to meet with a staff member once a month. This will be a good opportunity for participants to address issues, talk about progress, adjustment, challenges and accomplishments.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES - All participants will interact and socialize with other

Mentees will have access to someone who is knowledgeable about academics, college life and campus resources. Being mentored is wonderful experience for incoming students of color. They will have someone they can relate to, look for and count on during their first academic year at TCU.
Students who are interested in having a mentor should apply for this program online or in person at the IIS office. In order for students to participate in the Mentors Program, they must:
1) Fill out an application form once you have committed to TCU
Once this process is completed, IIS will review the gathered information and assign a mentor to the student based on his/her needs, interests and background.
THE PROGRAM IS LIMITED TO 50 MENTEES, SO DON’T WAIT!
WANT TO BE A MENTOR?
Mentors will be role models that will share their personal experiences and strategies for success. Based on the knowledge mentors have gained as students at TCU, they are prepared to provide appropriate support or to refer students (mentees) to the appropriate resources. The responsibilities of a mentor range from providing information on where to get food at midnight to finding the best solution/resource to overcome a crisis. Students who want to become mentors should:
- Have strong leadership and communication skills
- Have a good academic record
- Have a desire to work with students of color and international students, and contribute to their personal, social and academic growth
- Be sensitive to social and personal issues and maintain confidentiality
- Have the ability to evaluate situations and provide appropriate referrals
- Commit to the program for two consecutive semesters
